Historic Kidney Transplants Mark a Turning Point in Burkina Faso’s Healthcare System

Burkina Faso has reached a major medical milestone with the successful implementation of kidney transplantation procedures within its national healthcare system. This breakthrough represents a significant step toward medical self-sufficiency and improved access to specialized care for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.

The country’s first successful kidney transplant was performed at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Tengandogo, located in Ouagadougou. The historic procedure involved a 43-year-old woman receiving a kidney donation from her twin sister. The surgery was completed without major complications, and the transplanted organ functioned properly immediately after the operation. Following careful post-operative monitoring, the patient was discharged in stable condition, marking a landmark achievement for the national medical community.

This accomplishment was made possible through international cooperation, particularly with the support of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and Turkish transplant specialists. Beyond the surgical intervention itself, the partnership focused heavily on capacity building. More than 200 Burkinabè healthcare professionals received advanced training in transplant surgery, intensive care management, immunosuppressive therapy, and long-term patient monitoring. This strategic transfer of expertise ensures sustainability and strengthens local autonomy in managing complex medical procedures.

Subsequent transplant sessions were conducted in early 2026, demonstrating growing confidence and technical competence among local surgical teams. The success of these operations significantly reduces the need for costly medical evacuations abroad, which had previously been the only option for many patients with end-stage renal disease.

These achievements signal a new era for specialized medicine in the country. By developing in-country transplant capabilities, Burkina Faso is reinforcing its healthcare sovereignty while offering renewed hope to patients requiring life-saving renal replacement therapy.
